JBL Spot 2.1 Speakers:  Parts and Review

The JBL spot speakers are quite unusual looking and are sure to stand out.
They are somewhat mushroom shaped with a base of chrome rings supporting the domed top.

PARTS:
The satellites plug into the subwoofer and the subwoofer has a small dial on the back to control its volume.

The satellites are interesting in that their cords are actually wrapped in fabric, like the cord to your Grandmas old iron.  Quite Retro.
Volume control is placed on the right satellite.  The volume up and down controls are touch sensitive with no moving parts.  In order to Mute the system, all one needs to do is touch both up and down simultaneously.  It is a fairly slick design.

All 3 components can be skinned with either Black or White shells.  Mix and Match to suit your needs.

REVIEW:
We tested the JBL Spot speakers in a variety of situations.
We hooked them up to both a Laptop and a Desktop system, as well as an IPod.
We tested them for a couple weeks listening to an assortment of music, playing MMORPGs, and watching Videos.

The first thing we did was crank them up to see how loud they get.  We are happy to say they can pump out quite a bit of sound.
Most notable was that there was no distortion at all, even at max volume.
JBL uses a couple of technologies called Minimum Audio Parameter Shift (MAPS) and Optimized Compression Topology (OCT) to ensure that the sound is distortion free at high volumes.  This tech seems to work perfectly.

The satellites sound great, and produce clear sound.  There is a slight amount of tinniness but overall they rock.

Unfortunately the Subwoofer does not have the sound quality to back them up.  It takes some tweaking to get the subwoofer to perform adequately.  It does not seem to be a good match, soundwise, for the satellites.  It looks good, but we were unhappy with the sound produced from it.

Both the satellites and the speakers are powered by Neodymium magnets.

From Rock, to Swing, to New Wave the sound was clear and distinct and we were able to discern new bits of music we had never noticed before in our song collection.
IPod playback was flawless, with the IPod easily controlling the sound volume.
For gaming the sound was most excellent.  One wont get the 3D positional effects of a 5.1 system from a 2.1 but the sound is quite good.
The movies we tried sounded fine and the speakers performed adequately.
