S.T.A.L.K.E.R.:  Shadow of Chernobyl:  Playability

Graphics:
The visuals are very good although I did experience slight hitches at regular intervals. This could be a combination of my system and the large maps. This slight hitch in no way impeded gameplay and never seemed to happen a critical times. In between these slight hitches is very smooth gameplay. The environment seems to react directly to changes in the weather. As an example the grass bends with the wind. If not for the hitches I could have very easily become fully immersed in game. The hitching just seemed to snap me back.

Gameplay:
  Single Player:
The single player mode starts out with you being rescued and forced to work off your recovery. As you proceed through the levels, pretty much in any order you want, you collect items for trade as well as fighting off different types of enemies. You can trade items you pick up along the way off the ground and/or dead bodies for better weapons, food and gear. The game has multiple endings depending on what route you take. I only made it through one. The AI is better than average and play into the game and skill levels well. You run across a random 'dummy' but not very many and not enough to affect gameplay. I would have enjoyed this a lot more if it had a coop mode.

  Multi Player:
It took me until patch 1.003 to even get on line and play a multi-player round. The TDM setup is a cross of COD and Counter-Strike. Where you join a team and whoever reaches 150 kills first wins. Every player is started with a pistol.  You pick up money from dead players and in between spawns you have the option of visiting the buy board and purchasing bigger and better weapons.

It seemed to me that everyone was lagging really bad and it was almost impossible to hit someone who wasn't standing still. I only had the time to visit 4 servers, all with pings under 80 and all played the same. Time, meaning it took me so long to be able to connect online I was past deadline for the article and I had moved on/back to other games.
